Dominik Szoboszlai from Liverpool FC and Arda Güler from Real Madrid Football Shirt were involved in a heated argument during the international break that began on the pitch at Hungary's Puskas Stadium and spilled over into social media.
Szoboszlá's Hungarian side lost 3-0 to Turkey in the second leg of the Nations League promotion/relegation play-off on Sunday evening, the country's first home defeat since 2022. The Turkish team relegated Hungary to the second division of the competition, while they themselves were promoted to the A-League.
The Turkish side won the first leg 3-1 in Istanbul, with Güler having to watch on from the sidelines due to suspension. However, the Real Madrid substitute was in the starting eleven on Sunday and scored Turkey's second goal of the evening just two minutes after Hakan Calhanoglu had broken the deadlock with a penalty in the 37th minute.
In front of Güler's goal, Soboslai lost the ball on the edge of the Turkish penalty area, inadvertently triggering a counter-attack which the lanky midfielder finished off with a calm shot into the bottom corner.
During the match, the two got into an argument in which Güler put his finger to the lips of his Liverpool opponent to silence him. Hungarian media outlet Nemzeti Sports reported on the altercation on Instagram. Szoboslai's official account simply commented on the picture with the number "1088", which coincidentally corresponds exactly to the time when Güler played for Real Madrid this season.
The talented Turkish midfielder has only played six top flight games this season in the starting eleven. Carlo Ancelotti's repeated refusal to give the 20-year-old any more chances has fuelled numerous rumours linking him with a move away from the Spanish capital. Cheap jerseys Inter Milan was recently mentioned as a possible target.
Güler's compatriot Calhanoglu is a regular for the Serie A giants and has done nothing this week to dispel the transfer rumours. "I wish he could come and play with us," admitted the experienced midfielder, before adding: "Of course I hope and believe he deserves more playing time."
Szoboszlai, who is four years older than Güler, played 2,887 minutes for Liverpool, his best season on Merseyside to date. The Reds are considered favourites to win the Premier League title but, unlike Güler's Real Madrid, are no longer in the Champions League.
